The Old South End

Regular price $25.00 $0.00

The Old South End, or Das Alte SüdEnde as they say in German, is the old section of German Village, originally bounded more or less by South Public Lane (Livingston) on the north, Chillicothe Pike (High Street) on the west, Fourth Street on the East, and Kossuth Street to the south. Aptly named for its location, it became home to the German immigrants who without means, had to locate to where the land was cheap. Soon a booming ethnic neighborhood, many of the original streets and parks underwent name changes during anti-German sentiments during World War One, Pictured here are the streets circa 1890’s with their original names at that time.
