Cleveland, like Chicago, took on their census ranking as a nickname for the City. Many cities during the time, as they do now, took HUGE pride in their size and growth. Throughout the early 1900's, Cleveland was consistently the sixth largest city in the United States behind New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, St. Louis, and Boston, garnering the nickname - The Sixth City.
