Tuna Capital of the World Sweatshirt (Men's/Unisex)

Regular price $40.00 $0.00

When you hear Cannery Row, people usually think of San Francisco, but it’s actually San Diego that was once the Tuna Capital of the World. San Diegans has been fishing Tuna since the 1800’s, but in the early 1900’s, it really took off. By 1927, Tuna fishing expanded into Mexican waters and San Diego was known as the Tuna Capital of the World. In the 1930’s canneries were scattered along the waterfront of Little Italy and Downtown (then called New Town), and by 1940, 95% of packed tuna was canned in San Diego. The industry suffered a huge blow though when the Marine Mammal Protection Act was passed to prevent seine fishing (using the vertical nets to scoop up large amounts of fish). Foreign fishing industries didn’t have those regulations and rod and pole tuna fishing just couldn’t keep up. As a result, San Diego eventually lost its Tuna industry, but no worries San Diegans, you’re on the right side of history on this one.
